It seems as though we are inundated with alerts constantly, amber alerts, security alerts, school alerts and the list go on and on. Do you know the difference between a Flood Watch and a Flood Warning? A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding to develop due to predicted rainfall including any previous day’s rain. Flood Watches are usually issued for several counties at once and mean flooding could occur.
A Flood Warning is targeted to your specific area and means flooding is already occurring or is imminent. If you receive a flood warning that means to seek higher ground if you are in an unsafe location. If you are already in a safe place, it’s a good idea to stay there until the Warning expires. Flash Flooding usually subsides within a few hours in Central Texas. Better to be safe than sorry. If you are traveling when a Warning is issued take shelter somewhere safe and remember Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
